‘Detectorists’ Season 3: TV Review

Who would have thought a sitcom about a metal-detecting club would be one of the most heartwarming shows on tv? on paper it does, admittedly, sound like a bit of a hard sell. But scratch the surface of idiosyncratic comedy detectorists and you’ll find warmth and a wonderful cast of characters that elevate it to something quite special. Written and directed by mackenzie crook, probably best known as the gormless gareth in the uk office or as wooden-eyed cutthroat ragetti in pirates of the caribbean, detectorists ran on bbc 4 from 2014 to 2017. It won a bafta and is certainly popular, but it didn’t really catch on outside the uk and it truly deserves to.

Parents need to know that detectorists is a very low-stakes comedy about two middle-aged friends in a small community of metal detector hobbyists. The show's conflicts and concerns are delightfully mundane, and most of the humor is subtle. The storylines feel very adult, in that characters deal with… on the surface, nothing about the world of metal detection seems very exciting, but the chemistry and slow-burn characterizations in this quirky comedy bring it to life. Detectorists' heroes, andy (crook, of the office (uk) and the pirates of the caribbean movie franchise) and lance (jones), spend most of their time wandering up and down fields, discovering discarded pull tabs and recapping last night's tv trivia challenges.

When last seen, they had made a major find, and this special picks up where the series left off. The show’s languid pace and intermittent dialogue captures the awkward nature of male conversation and friendship. Hours spent in a field with your eyes on the ground make for long stretches of individual contemplation and silence.

(don’t make the mistake of calling them “metal detectors” — that’s the name of the actual device, not its operator, called a detectorist. ) crook plays andy, scuffling with day jobs while studying to become an archaeologist. Jones plays lance, a bit of a sad sack whose wife left him for a more macho lunk-head. They bond over their hobby, and as that hobby has anchored the story of their lives over three perfect seasons (albeit short — six episodes each), detectorists has refined the art of making a slice-of-life comedy with enough drama and storytelling to make you passionately invested in the characters.

Detectorists follows the relationship between two friends who share a passion for metal detecting. When andy and lance are together, they're like an old married couple. They gripe at each other, but there is a true bond underneath. Each has their own slightly dysfunctional lives but together they dream of finding a priceless saxon hoard that will cement their place in detecting history. Helping them along the way is a delightfully quirky crowd of characters who are drawn to this all-absorbing hobby. Across the first six episodes greed, betrayal, rejection and, finally redemption are all played out as the boys and their eccentric friends at the danbury metal detecting club search for that one big find.

I love this series. Have watched it through twice, and will be watching it again (and again). The cinematography is second to none. I love the way the opening of each episode has a close up of a different insect. The relationships between the characters is beautifully portrayed. The story arc is well constructed. I laugh and i cry in almost every episode. All of the characters are well constructed and engaging the acting is excellent. I cannot believe that mackenzie crook hasn't created any other series.
